The jaw of every healthy dog is swarming with germs that settle on the teeth and the oral mucosa. Normally the wear of the teeth caused by chewing and gnawing, the salivation and the movements of the tongue provide selfcleaning of the oral cavity. However, if these cleansing mechanisms fail, germs will increase massively and form yellowish-gray layers on the teeth. This so-called "plaque" is composed of food leftovers, germs, peeled of cells, etc. and soon covers the whole tooth. Initially these coatings are soft, but over time they calcify and subsequently form rock-hard tartar.

As in humans, the tartar pushes back the gum, which causes inflammations, creates cavities and eventually shrinks the gums. Now the tartar can also attack the dental neck and damage it with lasting effect.

By having an effect on the tooth neck and parts of the root, bacteria can penetrate into the tooth socket which can lead to relaxation of the teeth, root sepsis and the loss of teeth. Through the blood circulation, bacteria can be transported from the mouth to vital organs (i.e. the damaging of heart flaps).

Conscientious mouth hygiene prevents coating

Animal owners can contribute a lot to it: elective feeding and conscientious mouth hygiene (e.g., with toothbrush and toothpaste) should already be a daily routine with puppies.

Regular preventive medical care and a regular mouth check is of great importance for the health of your animal. Bad smelling coatings can be removed by the use of an ultrasound scanner (in combination with a slight sedation). Then teeth are polished and sealed.

Swiss Researchers found out that special mouth caves bacteria of the dog can cause serious illnesses in humans. The result was that blood poisonings cause gangrene, allergies and in some cases even deaths! More research is being conducted at the present time.
